How the daily word chain works
Every day there is one chain of seven words. The first and last are given. In between are five hidden words, and you get the first letter of each. Work from the top: the word you type has to join the word above it. If the top word is SNOW and the next starts with B, think snowball, snowboard, snowbank. Only one of those will also lead into the word after it, and that is how the chain checks itself.
Wrong guesses are not wasted. Each one shows another letter of the word you are stuck on. You can also tap Hint to show a letter without guessing. Use as few as you can if you are playing for a perfect green row.
Keep your streak
Finish the chain on consecutive days and your streak goes up. Your stats live in this browser only, so there is nothing to sign up for. If you miss a day, the archive still has every puzzle, though old ones do not count towards the streak.
Finished already? Word Chain Unlimited gives you as many chains as you want, and the Chain Reaction mode lets two people race on the same chain.
FAQ
About the daily chain
When does the daily word chain change?
A new chain goes live at 00:00 UTC. That is 8pm Eastern or 5pm Pacific in summer, and midnight in London in winter. Everyone in the world gets the same puzzle on the same day.
How do I solve today's word chain?
You see the first and last word and the first letter of each missing word. Type the word that pairs with the one above it, like RAIN then BOW for rainbow. A wrong guess shows one more letter, so you can always finish.
Is this the BuzzFeed Word Chain?
No. This is our own free daily puzzle with the same idea: link compound words and two-word phrases from top to bottom. There is no account, no paywall and no limit on the archive.
Can I play yesterday's word chain?
Yes. Every past puzzle stays playable in the daily archive, numbered from #1.
What do the green, yellow and red squares mean?
Green means you found the word with only its first letter showing. Yellow means you needed extra letters. Red means the whole word had to be revealed. The squares are what you share, so the answers stay hidden from friends.
